CAMPAIGNS FOR GOVERNOR MAY ACCEPT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM BOTH BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS.
The contribution limit for 2022 campaigns is $1,725 per person or entity for general election period. Couples may give $3,450 from a joint account with the limit attributed to each individual.
The limits apply to all types of contributors, including individuals, organizations, businesses, unions, political action committees, and party committees. In Maine, corporations may make contributions to candidates from their general treasuries. They are subject to the same contribution limits as other contributors.
NOTE: Election Law considers businesses, including corporations, and other organizations to be a single contributor. Two or more entities are considered a single entity if: a majority of their boards of directors are the same individuals; they share two or more officers; they are controlled or owned by the same majority shareholder(s); they are limited liability companies (LLCs) controlled or owned by the same majority member(s); or they are in a parent-subsidiary relationship. A sole proprietorship and its owner are considered to be a single entity.
Contributions are not deductible for federal or state income tax purposes. Maine Law requires the name and address for each individual whose contributions total more than $10 and additionally the occupation and employer name for those contributing $50 or more. Contributions from foreign nationals are prohibited. No person may make a contribution in the name of another person.
